more school

Hello, and happy Friday everyone! How glad I am to be faced with a relaxing and fun weekend! This week has been rather busy with activities outside of school. On Tuesday, Mom, Baby and I watched the Sound of Music as part of my history lesson. Baby actually paid attention, staying quiet and still, and even asking questions occasionally!  Unfortunately, the movie ended around 1pm, and I had to leave for my cotillion class at 3pm, and still needed time to get ready. Needless to say, I didn't get much schooling done that day. On Wednesday, we all went to a Pro-life Mass in the morning. We went on errands afterward, delaying school that day too. We went to the dentist on Thursday; it was Baby's first appointment! We also got home around 1pm, delaying school for yet a third day! Today I hope to be very productive, and get school done with plenty of time to spare before my friend arrives for our sleepover!

Now that I’ve told you all about the delays and outside-of-school activities, I suppose it's time to tell you about school now! All week for history, we have been doing a WWII unit. That's why we watched the Sound of Music. I had worksheets on the movie on the days following.  One of the assignments today was to write my own stanza for the song "My Favorite Things."  Here it is:

Freshly baked cookies

And clothes from the dryer,

Pools in the sunshine

and crack-aling fires,

Reading a book at a

white sandy beach --

These are a few of my favorite things.

In science I have been learning about atoms and DNA. I read the lessons in the text book and then do worksheets on the content in another notebook. It's a fairly easy subject, depending on the lesson, that is.

I only have grammar on Fridays now because I've started composition. Lately in the composition program I had been learning how to write nice paragraphs, but now I’m learning how to write an entire essay! I will post the first essay I write on the next blog I think, but I do have a paragraph from this week; here it is!

Organization is Important

Organization is a very important skill to have and helps people in their everyday lives. Organization also looks nice. Whether someone has company over and wants a neat house, or just wants to enjoy it, it is a great way to keep things clean. It is also easier to clean when one knows exactly where things go. There is a place for everything, and everything is in its place. Finding what is needed is also easier with organizing, as they know exactly where to look for it. It is overall a very good skill to have. This skill is very useful in a job, or when organizing an event, or just at home trying to keep things in order. Lives are made easier by organization.

Writing, Poetry, and Crafting, Oh My!

Hello everyone! One more week of school behind me, and one more weekend ahead of me! I sure do love Friday's, do you? This week's blog holds things a bit more interesting than last week's, as I had more subjects, and unfortunately, more work. Let's see what I have in store for you all!

First up, poetry! Who doesn't love a good riddle once and a while? Here's one I made up:

What do you call a duck that you hang things with?

“A Quack Tack!”

On to another form of writing. This was my first week of having composition this year, so I thought I’d share two paragraphs I wrote.

Going to the Movie Theater with Friends

Going to the movie theater is better with friends. Watching movies with friends is always more enjoyable than watching by one's self. Friends tend to laugh at a lot more in the movie than they would on their own; and most people love laughing. It is also a great way to spend time with each other while getting ready before and watching the movie. The fun lasts longer because the friends can talk about the movie and quote it. Going to the movie theater with friends is a really great way to spend the day!

Things That Make a Great Party

If someone wants to throw a party, chances are they'll want an unforgettable, amazing experience but what makes a great party? Games are always the go-to solution for get-togethers. Traditional games like Hide'N'Go'Seek, Pinata, or Scavenger Hunt are sure to keep the party going. To hold the guests' interest, the host could try more creative, out-of-the-box games like Mummy, keeping the balloon off of the ground, or having a disco dance! The host will also want to arrange time just to hang out, if the guests are teenage or older. A movie would be great, or even just sitting around talking. Every party should have food. The traditional food, like cake or other desserts are a must-have. Also finger food, preferably salty, to balance out the flavors. With these ideas, the party is sure to be great!

I promised to tell you the results of my leaf project I did with baby last week. One of the three papers had a faint imprint on it, so it didn't work as well as I had hoped, but it was still fun!

I hope you have enjoyed my school section of the blog! Now for a final topic: My non-related-to-school activities!

This week, I have been working on making masks. As a treat, I’m going to show you the step- by-step process of making these beauties.

Step one was to collect milk jugs and wash them. I collected distilled water jugs instead. We don't drink milk, and these don't have to be washed! For step two, I printed out a mask template. I cut it out, and then traced it onto construction paper, which is stronger. Then I cut that one out, which I used as my template for all the masks. I traced it onto a jug, wherever it fit nicely, and used my sharpest scissors to carefully cut it out. Once that was finished, I cut out ear shapes from the construction paper and traced them onto the jug to cut out. I positioned the ears where I liked them on the mask, and used blue tape to secure them. This is a picture of what they looked like at this stage.

Step three, paper mache-ing, was a two-day process. I cut newspaper into squares about an inch wide. I made the solution with water and flour, stirring until I liked the consistency. Then I paper mached them. 

 

When all the masks were covered, I left them to dry all night and day. 

 

The next day, I repeated this step with printer paper, so that the masks were completely white by the time I was finished. I again left these to dry overnight, and throughout the next day.

 

Finally, they were ready to paint! I painted the base coat on first, for color. The next coat was a slightly different color, painted with a dried out brush to get a furry texture. The last layer was yet another slightly different color, painted with the dried out brush. By the end of this, the masks looked furry, and realistic. Next I painted the ears with a slightly darker color than the original coat. Next, I traced the eyes so that they were black. Then I added shape to them, curving the lines and bringing the corners out to a point, giving a feline look to the eyes.

1st Week Back

Hey everyone! It's the first week of school since Christmas Break! I have to say I was not looking forward to coming back to school at all. But it was an easier week than I had thought. I've been waking up around 9 and finishing by about 1-2 for the most part. Plus, it's Friday! I am very excited to stay up and have a tiny break, ha ha!

In school this week, I've started poetry again, so why don't I share my poem with you?

Paper, meet the Pencil Tip.

Pencil, see the Paper flip.

If you mark in the wrong place,

Pencil's friend will soon erase.

Day or night,

Draw or write,

In Pencil and Paper, you will delight.

I wanted my poem to prove that you can write about anything, even a pencil touching the paper. If you have an eye for detail, poetry is a piece of cake! Ha ha!

Next up is science. I only had this subject one day this week! It was a project. I had Baby help me. We went outside and collected leaves. Next we put the individual leaves between pieces of paper. After this, we put heavy books on top, each leaf with a different weight on it. We'll leave these for one week, and when we come back, there should be imprints of leaves in the paper. The books didn't look very attractive, so Baby and I cut out leaves, butterflies, and a “pond” out of construction paper. We used blue tape to tape the cut-outs on to the books. Now it doesn't look like a boring science project, but a fun craft! 

This week was my last week of doing grammar every day. Next week, I start writing, and grammar is less often. I have to say I’m looking forward to it. I love writing, grammar - not so much. All in all, the first week back in school wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible. I think it was just right, and sharing it with you makes it all the better!
